I’ve been thinking about cloud collages ever since I saw this post on 1canoe2‘s beautiful Instagram feed.
The idea percolated for a bit and came back to mind when I spotted an advert in my alumni magazine. The advert featured a gallery wall full of framed pictures of the sky.
I thought to myself: “If we ever move away from here I’ll create a river gallery wall to remind us of our lovely views.”
Then I thought: “Why wait?”
We have a small wall at the end of our hallway, just calling out for some visual interest. A plan began to form.
But I was still concerned about knocking so many holes into the wall. We rent our flat, and a gallery wall leaves a lot of holes to repair. To the rescue… washi tape! I’ve had some success using this decorative tape to attach wallplanners and it’s never been a problem to remove. A decorative solution that wouldn’t damage our rented walls? Perfect!
An email from Photobox promoting their 5x5 Enlargment Prints was enough to set the plan in motion. I picked 35 of my favourite river and sky photos (easy to do as I had them tagged in Lightroom), uploaded and ordered. A quick visit to Etsy for the washi tape and I was good to go. The entire project cost less than £13 (£8 for the photos, £4.65 for the washi tape – and I still have loads of that left to use for other projects).
At first I tried to place them by sight, but quickly realised this led to very wonky placement. Then I struck on the idea of using strips of washi tape to fix my tape measure to the wall. As well as keeping the pictures level, this had the added benefit of allowing me to set an equal spacing between the pictures. And that’s all there was to it. Easy as! Below is a little clip of the process – excuse my outfit, I’d just got in from yoga and couldn’t wait a moment longer to get this project on the wall!
