Today I’d like to share with you one of those projects that is so simple, but turned out brilliantly.
Can I share a secret? I’m obsessed with taking panoramic
photographs. Put me in a beautiful location and you’ll soon find me slowly pivoting
on the spot, snapping half a dozen overlapping pictures.
When I get home and look at them on the computer I have a
temporary moment of confusion where I wonder why did I take so many almost
identical pictures? Then I put Photoshop Elements Photomerge
to work and two minutes later I have this:
So panoramas are fun, easy and look great, but what do you do with
them? Apart from printing a few at home to use as bookmarks, their unusual
shape meant that most of mine were living on my computer. Then, while working
on an unrelated photo mug project, I had an epiphany: MUGS were the perfect
shape to show off panoramic photos!
I happened to be on Photobox when this idea struck me, so that’s who I ordered from. The online software was quick and easy to use and I was impressed with the 3D representation of what the finished product would look like. The mug cost £8.49 + £2.49 postage. It arrived promptly in sturdy, attractive packaging and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. In fact I was so pleased that I ordered another two as presents for friends. This time there was a special offer on, so the second and third mugs cost only £5 each.
When the second set of mugs arrived I was disappointed to
see that the print quality was inconsistent. The picture just wasn’t as sharp
as the first mug. I sent an email to customer service and was promptly issued
with two new mugs free of charge. These turned out as excellent as the first.
So now I’m swimming in mugs. But it’s fine, as we’ve given away the ones I
ordered as gifts and now we have spares for us.
So now you have a use for all those beautiful panoramic photos, what’s stopping you? Why not pick some of your favourite locations and make mugs as Christmas presents? Or if you have a big family, you could line everybody up for a panoramic image, wrapped around a mug for the grandparents. If you don’t have Photoshop Elements there are plenty of apps available that will help you create panoramic images. I have downloaded a few and hope to write a post on them soon, but if you have any recommendations I’d love to see them in the comments below.
